We checked 20 independent Dorset shops, from Goulds in Dorchester to Folde in Shaftesbury, for opening hours and what they sell. Updated November 2026.
This guide lists 20 independent Dorset shops for Christmas shopping in 2026, with opening hours, addresses and what each one sells. Four to start with are Goulds in Dorchester, Winstone’s in Sherborne, The Book Shop in Bridport and Folde in Shaftesbury. Every entry was checked on 5 November 2026 against the shop’s own site, or the town listing where that site gives no hours.
We have not shopped at these places for this guide, and nothing here is a review. Each entry sets out what the shop says about itself, and the descriptions in quotation marks are its own words. Hours are the shop’s normal hours and many change in December, so ring before a long drive. The guide covers the Dorset Council area; Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole are not included.
Christmas shopping days to plan around
Three towns give over a day to it. Sherborne’s Festive Shopping Day is on Sunday 6 December, 10am to 4pm, with more than 100 stalls, Cheap Street and South Street closed to traffic and the tree lit at 4pm. The Chamber of Trade lists free parking in the town’s Dorset Council car parks. Bridport Christmas Cheer is on Wednesday 9 December, and the Dorchester Christmas Cracker is on Sunday 13 December, 11am to 4pm. Sherborne also held a late-night shopping evening last December, but we found no date for 2026.
All the stalls and times are on our page of Dorset Christmas markets.

How we chose
We started from the shops named in Dorchester’s own Christmas shopping guide, Dorset Life’s guide to the county’s independent bookshops, the awards each shop publishes, and how long it has traded. We then spread the list across the county and kept only shops with a website or town listing we could read on 5 November 2026. Dorchester has the most entries because its town listing gave us the most to check, not because it is better than anywhere else. Bridport in particular has many more independents than appear here. Run a place that should be here, or spot something that has changed? Email newsdesk@dorsetpost.co.uk. Taken a good photograph of any of these places? Email it to newsdesk@dorsetpost.co.uk and we will add it with your name as the credit.
For the rest of the season, see the Dorset Christmas markets, Christmas lights switch-ons, Christmas dinner in Dorset and what’s on this month. For a day out afterwards, read our guide to things to do in Dorset, and find more local firms in the business directory.
