Dorset trains to London: 2h07 Gillingham, 2h51 Weymouth

There is no single answer to how long it takes to get from Dorset to London, because the county has two entirely separate railways to the capital and they are forty-five minutes apart. The county’s biggest town has the slowest and dearest journey. A market town of 12,000 people in the far north, which most people outside the Blackmore Vale could not place on a map, has the fastest and cheapest.

Everything below was checked against live timetables and fares for Monday 10 August 2026 on traintimes.org.uk, which carries National Rail timetable and walk-up fare data, and against season ticket prices published by Trainline. Fares change, so check before you buy.

The two lines

The West of England line runs Exeter to London Waterloo via Salisbury, and it clips the north of the county. Its two Dorset stations are Gillingham (Dorset) and Sherborne. Trains are roughly hourly, run by South Western Railway, and go direct to Waterloo.

The South Western main line comes down through Southampton and Bournemouth to the coast. Its Dorset stations are Holton Heath, Wareham, Wool, Moreton, Dorchester South, Upwey and Weymouth. Also South Western Railway, also direct to Waterloo, but the extra hundred miles of route show up in both the clock and the price.

There is a third railway, the Heart of Wessex line, which Great Western Railway runs from Weymouth north to Bristol through Upwey, Dorchester West, Maiden Newton, Chetnole, Yetminster and Thornford. It is a fine line and it is how the Blackmore Vale villages reach Yeovil and Bath, but it is not a London route in practice. See the section below on why.

How long it takes and what it costs

The single most useful line in that table is the first train column. From Weymouth you cannot be in London before 09:25. The 06:19 is the first departure of the day and it takes three hours and six minutes. If you need to be somewhere in central London for a nine o’clock meeting, the train does not do it and no amount of paying more will change that. From Dorchester South the 06:00 gets you in at 08:48. From Sherborne and Gillingham you are at Waterloo by 07:36.

The fastest single service we found all day was the 14:42 from Gillingham, into Waterloo at 16:45, two hours and three minutes. The fastest from Weymouth was 2h 48m. Weymouth’s slowest advertised through service on the same day took 3h 30m, so it is worth checking which train you are on rather than assuming they are all the same.

Season tickets

These are the cheapest standard-class annual seasons to London Terminals, taken from Trainline on 9 August 2026. Every one of them has a dearer alternative row for a less restricted route, so read what you are buying.

An annual season from Weymouth costs £2,048 more than one from Gillingham, for a journey three quarters of an hour longer in each direction. Over a working year that is roughly £2,000 and 150 extra hours on a train. If you are choosing where in Dorset to live and you commute to London even two days a week, that gap is worth more than most other differences between the two towns.

Note the Dorchester row: the season ticket is issued for Dorchester South or Dorchester West, so it works from either station. Only Dorchester South has direct London trains.

Why the Heart of Wessex line is not a London route

You can go north from Weymouth through Dorchester West, Maiden Newton and Castle Cary and pick up a Great Western train to Paddington. It sounds sensible on a map and it does not work in practice. On the day we checked, the fastest Weymouth to Paddington journey was 2h 55m with a change, and most were between three and a half and three and three quarter hours. The direct Waterloo train does it in 2h 48m.

The fares make the point more bluntly. A Weymouth annual season routed via Westbury costs £14,548, against £10,260 via Southampton. The northern line is how you get to Yeovil, Castle Cary, Bath and Bristol, and it is the only railway the Blackmore Vale villages have. It is not how you get to London.

The towns with no station at all

Roughly half of Dorset’s market towns lost their railway between 1966 and 1977 and never got it back. If you live in one of these, the nearest station with a direct London service is:

• Bridport, West Bay and Charmouth: Dorchester South. Maiden Newton is closer but puts you on the Heart of Wessex line with a change to reach London.
• Blandford Forum: Poole, or Gillingham if you are heading up the Vale.
• Shaftesbury and Sturminster Newton: Gillingham (Dorset).
• Wimborne Minster, Ferndown and Verwood: Poole or Bournemouth, both of which are in the neighbouring Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole council area.
• Lyme Regis: Axminster, over the border in Devon, on the same West of England line as Gillingham and Sherborne.
• Swanage: Wareham. The Swanage Railway runs a heritage service between Swanage and Norden, which is a day out rather than a commute.
• Beaminster: Maiden Newton or Crewkerne, in Somerset.
• Portland: Weymouth.

The pattern is worth naming plainly. The county’s rail map serves the south coast strip and a thin line across the north, and leaves the whole middle of Dorset, including two of its largest market towns, with no railway of any kind.
