Weymouth tip opening times: 9am to 4pm daily until 31 March at Lodmoor, DT4 7SX. Book only for DIY waste or asbestos. What it takes and what it charges.

Weymouth tip opening times are 9am to 4pm, seven days a week, from 1 October to 31 March. The tip, officially Weymouth Household Recycling Centre, is at Lodmoor, on Preston Beach Road, Weymouth DT4 7SX, and it is open on every bank holiday except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

You do not need to book for an ordinary household trip. Weymouth is one of the six Dorset tips where a booked slot is only needed for DIY waste or asbestos, and it is one of only three in the county licensed to take asbestos at all. Everything below is from Dorset Council’s own listing for the site and its rules pages, checked on 17 October 2026.

Opening times

Period Hours Days
1 October to 31 March (now) 9am to 4pm Every day
1 April to 30 September 9am to 5pm Every day
Closed All day 25 December, 26 December, 1 January

The council’s listing says the times “change on 1 October and 1 April to reflect daylight hours”, so the longer summer hours should return on 1 April 2027.

Over Christmas 2026 the tip closes on Friday 25 December, Saturday 26 December and Friday 1 January 2027. The substitute bank holiday on Monday 28 December is not one of the three named closure days, so the site should open as normal. Expect queues on the first open days after each closure, Sunday 27 December and Saturday 2 January.

Where it is and how to get in

The tip is at Lodmoor, off Preston Beach Road (the A353) on the north-east side of Weymouth, next to the Lodmoor Country Park car parks and the RSPB reserve. The postcode for sat navs is DT4 7SX. The access road is shared with the beach car park, so on a busy weekend the queue for the tip can back up past the car park entrance.

If Weymouth is busy, the nearest alternative is Portland Household Recycling Centre on Easton Lane, Portland DT5 1BW, with the same hours and the same booking rule. Dorchester’s Louds Mill site, by contrast, needs a booking for every visit, even on foot.

Do you need to book?

Only for two things at Weymouth:

  • DIY waste: rubble, plasterboard, soil, sheet glass, hardcore and other waste from work you did yourself. You need a slot, and you can make up to four DIY bookings per household in any four-week period.
  • Asbestos: cement-bonded asbestos must always be pre-booked.

For everything else, such as garden waste, cardboard, wood, furniture, mattresses, electricals and general household waste, just turn up. Book DIY or asbestos slots on the council’s recycling centre bookings page or by phone on 01305 221037. Slots are 30 minutes long.

What Weymouth tip takes

The council’s list of accepted household items includes:

  • Garden and bulky: garden waste, wood, furniture, mattresses, carpet, pillows and duvets, real and artificial Christmas trees.
  • Electricals: large appliances, fridges and freezers, small electricals, laptops and mobile phones (delete your data and remove the SIM first), all types of light bulb, vapes.
  • Recycling: paper, cardboard, cans, foil, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, hard plastics, cartons, textiles, books, coffee pods.
  • Hazardous household items: paint, batteries, car batteries, cooking oil, engine oil (up to 5 litres a visit), and garden or household chemicals in their original labelled containers (up to 5 litres a visit).
  • Charged items: tyres, gas bottles and fire extinguishers.

It does not take business or trade waste of any kind, including waste from a builder or tradesperson you paid, even if you offer to pay. It also refuses items such as ammunition, marine flares, diesel and creosote. The full list is on the council’s what can and can’t be taken page.

DIY waste: 16 bags free, then charges

Dorset Council residents can bring up to 16 bags of DIY waste free over a maximum of four visits in any four-week period. A bag is a standard 25-litre rubble bag that one person can lift. A small item such as a toilet, cistern or ceramic sink counts as one bag; a bath or a glass shower panel counts as four.

Above the free allowance, the council charges:

Material Charge
Hardcore and rubble (bricks, tiles, concrete, slates, ceramic sanitaryware, window and door glass) £1.50 per bag or item
Soil, stones, sand and gravel £1.50 per bag
Plasterboard and plaster £2.50 per bag, £10 per sheet
Car and motorcycle tyres £5 per tyre

People who live outside the Dorset Council area, including Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, cannot leave DIY waste free. They pay a non-refundable £8.50 booking fee plus the charge at the site, or use their own council’s tip.

Asbestos at Weymouth

Weymouth is one of only three Dorset tips, with Blandford and Wareham, licensed to take cement-bonded asbestos. It is for small DIY jobs only, such as replacing a damaged garage roof panel, not for stripping a whole roof. A one-off booking covers one of:

  • 6 bags
  • 4 bags and 1 sheet
  • 2 bags and 2 sheets
  • 3 sheets

Sheets must be no bigger than 6ft by 4ft (183cm by 122cm). Accepted items include bonded roof sheets, floor and ceiling tiles, soffits, gutters and drainpipes, old storage heaters, water tanks and ironing boards. Larger amounts need a licensed asbestos disposal company.

Vans and trailers

Vans, pick-ups and larger vehicles need a permit, or a hire agreement of no more than three days, to use the site. Check your vehicle on the council’s vehicle permits page before you load up. Cars that do not need a permit can tow a trailer with a bed of up to 1.2 metres by 1.8 metres (about 4ft by 6ft). A vehicle that needs a permit cannot bring a trailer at all.

For the other nine Dorset tips, their hours and which ones need a booking, see our Dorset tip opening times page. Kerbside collection days, the garden waste subscription and Christmas bin changes are on our Dorset bin collection days page.
