Abbotsbury's Illuminate light trail runs on selected dates from 20 November to 31 December, with free parking, no booking fee and Santa from 5 December.
Yes, Illuminate is on this year. Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens has confirmed Abbotsbury Illuminate 2026 on selected dates from Friday 20 November to Thursday 31 December, and tickets are already on sale. The gardens describe it as “our longest Illuminate route yet”, taking the trail further into the gardens and the woodland valley.
The gardens are also running an October Illuminate from Saturday 24 to Saturday 31 October, inviting visitors to “experience Illuminate early this year”, so half term gets a run of the trail too. Everything here was read on the gardens’ own website on 4 October 2026.
The quick answer
- Christmas run: selected dates, 20 November to 31 December. The gardens have not listed which nights are in and which are out; the booking system shows what is available.
- Half-term run: 24 to 31 October.
- Free car parking, no booking fee, family tickets available. Book in advance through the gardens’ online booking system.
- Prices and timeslots are only shown on the booking system. The event pages do not print a ticket price.
- Santa: weekends 5, 6, 12 and 13 December, then daily 19 to 23 December, in the daytime or combined with an evening Illuminate slot.
- Carols with the Wessex Military Band: Monday 14 December from 6pm, on an Illuminate ticket.
Dates and tickets
The Christmas event page gives the run as “20th November until 31st December (selective dates)”. It does not say which evenings are skipped, so do not assume it is open every night. The gardens say “Tickets now on sale” and that family tickets are available, with no booking fee and free car parking included.
Tickets are sold through the gardens’ booking page, which hands over to an external ticketing site. That is where the timeslots and prices sit; we could not read them from the gardens’ own event pages, so we are not quoting a price here. Abbotsbury’s ticketing line is 01305 871130.
Illuminate is an evening event. Normal daytime entry to the gardens is a separate ticket: the prices page lists the gardens open daily from 10am to 5pm, last entry 4pm, at £15 for an adult and £7.50 for a child aged 5 to 15, under-fives free. The passport ticket that adds the Swannery is not sold from November to February, because the Swannery is closed.
What the trail is
The gardens’ own description is of a walk through “the gardens and woodland valley, where familiar plants and pathways are transformed after dark”, with light displays of colour, shapes and textures along the route. It is pitched at all ages, and the gardens say it suits “a special family evening”.
October half term: an early run
The October Illuminate page lists the trail from Saturday 24 to Saturday 31 October 2026, with the same longer route, family tickets, no booking fee and free parking. Other Halloween and half-term options across the county are on our Dorset Halloween page.
Santa at the gardens
Father Christmas has a woodland cabin grotto in the gardens on 5, 6, 12 and 13 December, then every day from 19 to 23 December. There are two ways to see him:
- Daytime. On the daytime grotto page, every child needs a ticket, adults see Father Christmas free, and each child gets a gift.
- Teatime and early evening, with Illuminate. The combined ticket covers the grotto and Illuminate entry for the child visiting Santa only. Adults and any other children need their own Illuminate ticket for the same date. The gardens say it does not matter if your Illuminate timeslot differs from your grotto slot, as long as the date matches.
The gardens close in high winds for safety. When that happens, tickets are refunded and you rebook another date. More grottos around the county are on our Santa specials and grottos page.
Carols and the other December events
- Sing-along Christmas carols, Monday 14 December from 6pm. The Wessex Military Band plays traditional carols on the courtyard outside the cafe, joined by Father Christmas. The full trail is open, and you need an Illuminate ticket for a timeslot that evening.
- Christmas quiz with Santa, Monday 14 December at lunchtime, in the cafe.
- Knit and natter with Santa, Tuesday 15 December at lunchtime, in the cafe.
- Festive best-dressed dog with Santa, Wednesday 16 December at lunchtime: bring your dog to the cafe for a photo.
Access, dogs and the paths
The gardens’ access page says the paths are gravel and “some areas are very steep due to the natural topography”. There is a shorter wheelchair and mobility scooter route over gravel, rough ground and slopes, and the gardens recommend an all-terrain, wide-based wheelchair. None are available to hire. Disabled parking is in the first row of the main car park, 50 metres from the entrance, and the accessible toilets are behind the cafe.
For daytime visits, dogs are allowed on short, non-extendable leads, and assistance dogs are welcome everywhere. The Illuminate pages do not say whether dogs can come on the evening trail, so ask when you book. In the dark, on gravel and slopes, sensible shoes and a torch are worth having.
Getting there and parking
The gardens are at Buller’s Way, Abbotsbury, near Weymouth, DT3 4LA. Parking at the gardens is free for Illuminate. On 4 October the gardens’ website was carrying a notice that they are open as usual but with road closures at Market Street and Rodden Row in Abbotsbury village, asking visitors to follow the diversions. Check our Dorset roadworks and travel page before you set off, and the parking in Dorset page if you are combining the trip with an afternoon in Weymouth.
Also from the same organiser
The gardens’ events page also lists a bonfire and fireworks night at Melbury House on Friday 6 November, gates 6pm and fireworks 7pm. The details, and the county’s other displays, are on our Dorset fireworks page.
