Swanage Railway's Yuletide Express runs from 28 November at £29.95 a seat and Kingston Lacy's Storytelling with Santa is £15.50 a child from the same day.

The two big Father Christmas experiences in the Dorset Council area both open on Saturday 28 November 2026. The Swanage Railway’s Father Christmas Yuletide Express is a one-hour steam journey with a gift for every child at £29.95 a seat, and the National Trust’s Storytelling with Santa at Kingston Lacy is a ticketed story session at £15.50 a child on top of admission. The railway says its tickets “sell fast” and the Trust says booking for Santa is essential, so neither is a December decision.

Below are every Santa event we could verify from the organisers’ own pages on 25 September, with prices, dates and what is included. Grottos run by town councils and chambers of trade at the lights switch-ons and Christmas markets are on those pages, linked at the end.

Swanage Railway: three Christmas trains

Father Christmas Yuletide Express. The railway’s event page says it runs “From: 28th Nov 2026”. Swanage Station is dressed for Christmas with a giant snow globe for photos, and the train makes a one-hour return journey through Purbeck. On board there is a Magic Ticket Collector, elves, and then Father Christmas, who “makes his way through the train to meet each family”. Every child gets a wrapped gift, everyone gets a candy cane and chocolate coins, and children can hang a wish on the Christmas Wishing Tree at the station.

Prices, which the railway says are “frozen at 2025 rates”:

  • Standard seating: £29.95
  • Children on laps (under-2s only), with gift: £14.95
  • Private family compartment for up to six: £199.95
  • Relaxed carriage, a quieter environment: £29.95, or £14.95 on a lap

Every ticket includes Freedom of the Line travel on the railway’s other standard services that day between Swanage, Corfe Castle and Norden. The railway’s advice is to park at the Purbeck Park car park at Norden “to avoid the Christmas traffic” and ride in. The running dates are on the booking calendar on the event page.

Christmas Belle. A festive afternoon tea served at your seat in the restored Devon Belle Pullman observation car, with a welcome glass of Prosecco or sparkling elderflower, finger sandwiches, miniature Christmas cakes and patisserie, and tea or coffee with petit fours on the return leg. The Christmas Belle page lists eleven dates: 28 and 29 November, 5 and 6 December, 12 and 13 December, and 19 to 23 December. Prices are shown at booking.

Christmas Carol Trains. An evening steam train from Swanage to Corfe Castle on Thursdays 3, 10 and 17 December, 7pm to 9pm, according to the Carol Trains page. At Corfe Castle there is a mince pie and mulled wine or a soft drink from the historic brake van, carols with the St Martin bell ringers from Wareham, and a bagpiper who plays the train in and out. The page gives tickets as £20 adult and £10 child (3 to 15), under-3s free without a seat; the ticket panel on the same page shows £22 and £12, so check the price applied when you book. Kingston Lacy: Storytelling with Santa

The National Trust’s Christmas at Kingston Lacy page describes an “adventure to find Santa in his hidden storybook nook for a cosy Christmas tale, an early gift and a photo with the man himself”. Tickets cost £15.50 per child (up to age 12) with one accompanying adult, and normal admission applies, which is £23 an adult and £11.50 a child for non-members. It runs “from 28 November” and “booking is essential”. There are relaxed sessions on 18 December, “quieter with nothing too noisy before or during the story and fewer people attending each session”.

Bridport: Santa Live! at the Electric Palace

The Electric Palace has Santa Live! on Sunday 20 and Monday 21 December, with performances at 11am (a relaxed performance), 1pm, 2pm, 4pm and 6.30pm across the two days. Tickets are on the theatre’s booking site or the ticket line on 01308 424 901. The same week the Palace shows The Nutcracker on 22 December at 2pm and a free screening of It’s a Wonderful Life on 23 December.

Grottos at the switch-ons and markets

  • Lyme Regis: Santa arrives on his sleigh to lead the countdown at the lights switch-on on Saturday 21 November, and the town’s Santa’s grotto is at the Baptist Church on Saturday 12 December from 10.45am. Details on the Christmas lights switch-on page.
  • Swanage: Father Christmas has a grotto at the Swanage Christmas Market on Saturday 5 December, with a merry-go-round alongside. Details on the Christmas markets page.
  • Weymouth, Dorchester, Sherborne and Blandford had not published grotto details for 2026 by 25 September. We will add them as the town councils and chambers post.
