Letters are going to 19,000 households served by the Wareham depot, from Swanage to Upton and Bere Regis. No letter means your day stays the same.

Bin collection days are changing for around 19,000 households across Purbeck and Upton from Monday 28 September. Dorset Council announced the change on 9 September and is writing to every affected home this month.

The rule to remember is simple. If your household is affected, a letter will arrive during September with your new collection arrangements. If no letter arrives, your collection day stays exactly as it is.

The changes affect most households served by the council’s Wareham waste depot, including homes in:

  • Wareham
  • Swanage
  • Upton
  • Corfe Castle
  • Wool
  • Bovington
  • Lytchett Matravers
  • Bere Regis
  • the surrounding Purbeck villages

Why the rounds are changing

The council says the changes are part of ongoing work to make waste collection more efficient and reliable as communities grow and collection routes need updating.

Cllr Jack Jeanes, Dorset Council’s Cabinet Member for Place Services, said: “We know that changing collection days can take a little getting used to, which is why we’re writing directly to residents affected by these changes.

“The most important thing for people to remember is that if your collection day is changing, you’ll receive a letter with all the information you need. If you don’t receive a letter, your collection arrangements will stay the same.”

Weymouth went through this in April

Purbeck is the second area to get this treatment. The council redesigned the rounds run from its Weymouth depot from 13 April this year. That change affected around 32,000 households in Weymouth, Portland, Chickerell and Osmington, and used the same letter system: a letter if your day moved, nothing if it did not.

What it means for you

  • Do nothing yet. The council says residents should wait for the letter rather than checking online now. Put your bins out on your usual day until Monday 28 September.
  • Watch the post during September. The letter explains your new collection days and everything you need to prepare.
  • No letter means no change. The council is only writing to affected households.
