Fire crews were called to Keel House at 00:38 on Sunday after a top-floor blaze spread into the roof space. Residents evacuated, road closures in place.

Residents were evacuated from Keel House, a block of flats on Dorchester Road in Weymouth, after a fire broke out overnight into Sunday 20 September. Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service was called at 00:38. The fire started on the top floor and spread into the roof space. At the height of the incident the service had eight appliances at the scene. That included a support unit and an aerial ladder platform.

In an update at about 10:00 on Sunday, the service said:

  • three appliances and an aerial ladder platform remained at the scene
  • road closures were still in place
  • people were advised to avoid the area

The service has not yet published anything on the cause of the fire, or said whether anyone was hurt. It has also not said when residents will be able to return. This page will be updated when it does.

The building

Keel House is at 68a Dorchester Road, on the main road between Weymouth town centre and Dorchester. The government’s energy certificate register lists 32 flats at the address, numbered 1 to 32. (Find an energy certificate, DT4 7FA)

What it means for you

The fire service’s advice on Sunday morning was to avoid the area while closures are in place. Dorchester Road is the main road north out of the town centre, so allow extra time for any journey through that side of Weymouth until the closures lift. How this compares

For scale: the fire service’s own record of the King Street building fire in Weymouth in January 2025 shows around 60 firefighters at its height, with about 25 people displaced as a precaution. (DWFRS incident report, 4 January 2025) Sunday’s eight appliances is a smaller response than that. It is still one of the largest deployments to a Weymouth building the service has reported since.

What we do not know yet

  • What caused the fire. The service has published nothing on this, and a fire investigation normally follows once the building is safe.
  • Whether anyone was hurt. No injuries have been reported by the service, which is not the same as none having happened.
  • When the 32 flats’ residents can go home. That depends on the state of the roof and top floor, which the service has not yet described.
